Protecting Your Skin In The Summer

We often don’t think of our skin as an organ. However, in reality, our skin is our largest organ in our body— which is why it’s imperative that we take good care of it.

From developing a proper skincare routine to ensuring we’re eating a skin-healthy diet, there are plenty of treatments, procedures and simple lifestyle changes we can make to ensure our skin is in the best-possible health.

So, let us ask you this: Have you adapted your skincare routine to best support your skin during the summer months? Yes, you read that correctly — your approach to skincare should absolutely change based on season, especially if you’re struggling with oily or acne-prone skin.

With that being said, let’s start off with some simple changes you can make to your summer skincare routine, no matter your skin type:

How to take care of your skin during the upcoming summer months:

  • Increase exfoliation
  • While we wouldn’t suggest exfoliating every day, almost everyone can benefit from increasing their exfoliation to at least a couple times per week in the summer. This is especially important during the summer months, where skin tends to be a bit more stressed out due to time spent in the sun.

  • Increase SPF
  • Speaking of time spent in the sun, we can never say it enough: Don’t forget your sunscreen!

While sunscreen should be worn all year-long, it becomes even more important to ramp up your sunscreen usage in the summertime, when UV rays become more intense and your time outdoors likely increases.

  • Drink more water
  • Again, while getting plenty of water is important all year round, it becomes even more important in the summer when you’re more likely to be sweating and losing fluids.

Not only is this important for your overall wellness, but skin also benefits from proper hydration.

  • Check for non-comedogenic makeup
  • Never is more important to ensure you’re using non-comedogenic makeup than in the summer. If your makeup is full of pore-clogging ingredients, you’ll likely start breaking out as soon as your sweat and makeup mingle. Check your labels and be diligent about wearing the cleanest, lightest makeup during the summer months.

  • Stay consistent with moisturizer
  • For most of us, summer tends to be the time of year where our skin feels most hydrated, especially for those of us who live in humid climates like Florida.

Having said this, you do not have permission to start skipping out on moisturizing simply because the air feels more humid. Even if your skin feels moisturized, you still need that extra step in your routine. Consistent moisturizing keeps skin balanced and protects it from pollutants, chemicals and irritants.

How to take care of acne-prone skin in summer

Acne is a year-round skincare concern that many people struggle with. Unfortunately for some, however, acne can greatly increase in the summer.

To battle this, we recommend wearing less makeup, checking labels for non-comedogenic ingredients, staying out of the sun to avoid further irritation/inflammation, being gentle when cleansing (avoid scrubbing!) and limiting the number of products you’re using to the bare essentials. While it might seem counter-intuitive to use fewer products, acne often develops due to irritation and inflammation.

Be particularly gentle with your acne-prone skin in the summer.

How to take care of oily skin in the summer

Oily skin in the summer is something that many people deal with. To combat oily summer skin we suggest ramping up exfoliation, testing out mattifying lotions, experimenting with powder (non-comedogenic) makeup and not skipping out on moisturizer. It might be another counter-intuitive point, but oily skin is often your skin’s way of telling you it’s dehydrated.

To conclude, how do I take care of my skin in the summer?

Bottom line: whatever your skin type, summer skincare is all about lightening up your routine and being smart about your sun exposure.

Keep in mind that your skin can change during the summer, adapt as those changes happen, and don’t be afraid to keep things simple to avoid over-irritation.

Follow these simple guidelines and you’re well on your way to glorious summer skin.
