The Truth About Wrinkles and The Best Way To Get Rid Of Them

While many believe that wrinkles are a badge of honor and a sign that you’ve reached the milestone of old age, the truth is that no one actually wants them. Who wants to have to look in the mirror every day and be reminded that they’re getting older?

Luckily, there are many ways to prevent and get rid of wrinkles. But before we take a look at them, let’s talk about what wrinkles are.

What are wrinkles?

Wrinkles can be described as folds, creases, ridges or lines in the skin. They occur naturally as we age because, over time, our skin loses its elasticity. Wrinkles also happen because of a decrease in the natural oils produced to keep the skin hydrated.

Wrinkles can also be caused by excessive exposure to UV radiation, smoking, repeated facial expressions and even excessive alcohol consumption.

Can I prevent wrinkles?

Prevention is indeed better than cure, as wrinkles are something that can be delayed and prevented for the most part. Here’s how:

Using moisturizer

While the skin does usually a well-enough job of keeping itself moisturized, it can get extremely dry from face washes, pollutants in the air, hormonal imbalances, environmental changes and more. Using moisturizer hydrates the skin, thereby allowing it to better maintain its elasticity over time.

Wearing sunscreen

You can avoid sun damage from UV radiation by wearing sunscreen — not only when you're at the beach, but daily! UV radiation reaches you every time you are outside. Wearing hats, scarves and using umbrellas is also a good idea to avoid too much sun exposure.

With that being said, we suggest avoiding tanning beds and any UV radiation treatment that is applied directly to the skin, as these things can also contribute to wrinkle development.

Lifestyle choices

A lack of sleep can create bags under the eyes, along with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night is a great way to prevent signs of aging or uneven skin.

If you are a smoker, try to reduce the number of times you smoke or quit entirely, since this can lead to wrinkles. The same is true for alcohol consumption.

Lastly, it’s important to consume vitamin-rich foods and water, which contain the necessary nutrients and antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C and E. These all promote healthy skin, reduce inflammation and most importantly, prevent signs of premature aging.

How to get rid of wrinkles

If you already have wrinkles, don’t fret. There are many ways you can address them. These include:

At-home care

The first step to getting rid of wrinkles should start at home.

Pay close attention to what you put into your body and modify your diet. Do your research on the foods you consume to find about their nutrient contents and their potential skin benefits. Water is also your best friend, since it keeps your entire body hydrated.

Ensure you’re taking good care of your skin. Your skincare routine should include cleansers, as well as moisturizers such as oils, creams and lotions that help prevent dry skin and reduce fine lines. You can also incorporate masks and natural remedies into your routine such as aloe vera, shea butter, coconut oil and essential oils.

There are also many tools you can try to help prevent wrinkles such as face steamers, LED and laser light therapy devices, microneedling rollers and exfoliating brushes. Be sure to consult your esthetician or dermatologist before using any such tools.

Medical treatments

Medical treatments do what at-home treatments can’t (eg. they target deep, stubborn wrinkles and have more long-lasting results).

Some of the most popular ones include Botox, chemical peels, laser therapy and fillers.

  • Botox works by blocking the receptors that cause wrinkles to form, making them relax and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. These results last for a few months. Regular treatment will need to continue to maintain a youthful appearance.
  • Chemical peels are a great way to remove or peel off the top layer of the skin, where the wrinkles and other blemishes lie. The skin underneath is generally younger and more vibrant as the injury heals.
  • Laser therapy involves the use of light energy to jumpstart skin regeneration. It is a non-invasive procedure using precise bursts of light, which reduce the appearance of wrinkles in a faster time-span than many other treatment solutions.
  • Fillers work by plumping up the skin under the wrinkles to smooth out and fill out depressions in the skin.
